The Fehi Madharusa background and other details about the program

About Fehi Madharusa

The Maldives are a jewel in the Indian Ocean. The unique geography of these low-lying coral islands and the reefs that surround them draws millions of tourists each year. However, the beauty of the Maldives can hide a fragile reality. The impact of sea level rise caused by climate change has the potential to be devastating and the long-term survival of coral reefs is in question after successive bleaching events.

In recognition of the urgent need for action, the government of the Maldives has announced a target for the country to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. A radical decarbonization programme will be necessary to achieve this goal, alongside accelerated efforts to adapt low-lying islands to the harshest impacts of climate change.

The future of our country lies hand-in-hand with the future of our young people who will enter a radically different workplace than many of us have experienced as they rise to meet the challenge of their generation and to keep pace with technical advancements.

With an innovative and creative approach to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, schools can be a breeding ground of ideas and pathways to a sustainable future. Our young people have the potential to be world leaders in environmental solutions such as coral restoration, sustainable waste management, renewable energy, sustainable fisheries and climate financing.

Fehi Madharusa provides the framework for this journey.

Designed to complement the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), Fehi Madharusa takes inspiration from the NCF key competency of Using Sustainable Practices and the key value of Values Related to the Environment and brings them to life in an energetic partnership between the school, the students, the parents and the community.

The Fehi Madharusa framework embraces the NCF goal to support students to become motivated and inquisitive citizens who seek to use and create knowledge, drawing on their Maldivian heritage at the same time as understanding both the local and global context of our most pressing challenges.
