Fehi Madharusa

The Fehi Madharusa background and other details about the program

How to be a Fehi Madharusa

In order for a school to attain the status of a Fehi Madharusa, it will need to go through a series of 10 steps, beginning with the initial registration process. Below are the 10 steps required to be completed by each school:

1. Officially register participation

Offificially register your participation in the Fehi Madharusa programme with NIE

Schools can sign up for the program with the Department of Curriculum of the National Institute of Education (NIE). Send a letter confirming your participation and the award you are registering for.

2. Establish Fehi Team
Establish your Fehi team to lead environmental stewardship and sustainability in your school

Your school will need to create a team to drive this process. The team can be as diverse and large as you choose and it should be made up of key members of the school community, including students and adults.

All ages and grades, teachers, administrators, PTA, custodians, security… get everyone involved and represented! 50% Gender divide!

3. Express vision

Express your vision

Your Fehi team needs to agree a vision statement that demonstrates the school’s
commitment to the goals of the Fehi Madharusa framework. This should be brief, simple and memorable to inspire action in the school community towards positive change.

4. Carryout baseline survey

Design a baseline survey of your school’s current environmental footprint and current level of eco-literacy

Your baseline survey will help you to understand the current organizational and educational practices at your school and review the school’s environmental impact and eco-literacy status. This knowledge will inform your action plan and help set realistic targets. You can download the template for your baseline survey from this website.

5. Outline action plan

Develop your action plan

Informed by your baseline survey, you will need to produce an action plan for the year including whole school activities that target the four themes of the Fehi Madharusa Program. The plan should reflect the level of award you are aiming for – bronze, silver or gold. Beyond the whole school activities, the team must also encourage teachers to adapt their lessons to integrate the four Fehi themes in all subjects.

6. Implement action plan

Implement the action plan throughout the year and document this thoroughly

The activities carried out at the school need to be documented in detail for a full year. All adapted lesson plans should be collected for record keeping and to create a shared resource for schools.

7. Compile report

Compile a report with quantitative and qualitative data

8. Submit report

Submit your report of all the activities implemented from your Fehi action plan throughout the year

At the end of the year, all documentation should be shared with the curriculum department of NIE. The Fehi Folder Summary Sheet template is provided at the end of this guide, and outlines what you need to submit including both qualitative and quantitative data.

You can display this seal on school notice boards, while the digitized seal can be included on the school’s website, newsletter and social media accounts.
